HF: Thanks to |SCT for proofreading some of the following script.
The Lamma Quarry is located in Luk Chau Wan on the north side of Sok Kwu Wan covering about 49 hectares and stretching across 1km of coastline. The Quarry started operation in 1978. Rehabilitation work started in 1995 and were completed in 2002.
The rehabilitation works involved developing a self-sustainable ecosystem similar to the surrounding area. An artificial lake, covering an area of 4 hectares was developed on the coastal side of the site. It is now proposed as a site for recreation and commercial development.(1)

Today, under a plan formulated in 1989, the three remaining operational quarries in Hong Kong are being rehabilitated to form green areas for future development. Shek O (completion in 2009), Anderson Road (completion in 2013) and Lam Tei (completion in 2015) quarries are being rehabilitated under contracts that involve major recontouring to soften the appearance of the angular quarry profile, tree and shrub planting, and erosion control. A similar rehabilitation contract at Lamma Quarry was completed in 2002 to form a green site of 0.49 square kilometres. (2)
