The Hongkong Electric Company’s new $25 million power station at North Point will be opened this afternoon. Chairman, Mr B.T. Flanagan, will perform the opening ceremony at 4.30 p.m.
The ”B” Generating Station will begin operating immediately. So far one power unit of 30,000 kilowatts has been installed.
The station has been designed to accommodate four more similar units.
The generating plant has been assembled by the English Electric Co of London.
Main sub-contractors were Babcock & Wilcox Ltd, who supplied boiler plant, British Insulated Cailender’s Cables cable and wiring, and Messrs George Wimpey & Co Ltd who carried out all the civil constructional work including the power station buildings and foundation work.
Construction of the present plant started in August 1955. Then it was estimated that it would not be in commission until the end of 1959.
