Flying boats in Hong Kong
Tony Farr left this comment on 29th October 2019 beneath our article, Imperial Airways – including first scheduled flight into Hong Kong 1936 written by one of our main contributors IDJ.
“My wife and her mother flew from Hong Kong to Southampton in 1948 by flying boat. My wife’s father worked for Jardine Matheson and was Arthur Ross. My wife’s mother was Coralie Ross and my wife was Edwina. Is there a passenger list showing their names and if so how can one be obtained. Regards Tony Farr.”
On 1st November 2019 IDJ responded to Tony’s comment:
“Post-war the flying boats were operated by BOAC. Imperial Airways had ceased to exist in 1939 on the outbreak of WW11.
Jardine’s were the Hong Kong agents for BOAC in the 1940s.
It’s doubtful that passenger lists still exist for that period, but asking the British Airways Archives could be worth trying. They have an on-line presence and are usually most helpful.
Alternatively, Hong Kong’s newspapers at that time would routinely publish lists of arriving and departing passengers on aircraft such as BOAC’s, and passenger carrying ships.
Jardine’s archivist in London at one time acknowledged that they had retained very little information on their agency relationship with BOAC.”
