Company History: Formed in 1987, the company was initially a joint venture between the American waste management leader Browning Ferries Industries (BFI) and Swire Pacific Limited.

Due to the acquisition of BFI’s non-American subsidiaries by SITA in 1997, SITA took over BFI’s shareholding in the joint-venture, the name of which became Swire SITA.

Since its entry into the Hong Kong market in 1987, Swire SITA has expanded steadily to become Hong Kong’s foremost waste services company.

In 2009, the SITA Waste Services Limited became wholly owned by SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT, the largest dedicated environmental company in the world.

Hong Kong is one of the leading cities in the world with a well thought-out master plan and coherently implemented infrastructure to manage its solid waste. It has proven to be not only cost-effective but also environmentally responsible for future generations.

Back in the early 1980’s, the Hong Kong Government started working on planning long-term for the city’s future waste disposal strategies in response to the ever increasing volume of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generated everyday. The Waste Disposal Plan, eventually approved in 1989, is essentially an inter-woven network consisting of three very large landfills located in the remote areas of the New Territories being fed by a series of refuse transfer stations strategically located within the centres of population where MSW is generated.

The Waste Disposal Plan developed in the 1980’s has served Hong Kong well. However circumstances change, population increases necessitating the evolution of the Waste Disposal Plan to include Waste to Energy, Mechanical & Biological Treatment etc.

Activities: SITA provides a complete waste management service, including municipal, commercial and industrial waste collection, urban cleansing, transfer station design, construction and operation, the production and marketing of compost, waste sorting and recovery, the design, construction and operation of state-of-the-art landfill facilities, waste-to-energy operations and the restoration and aftercare of closed landfills.

In Hong Kong, SITA operates six solid waste transfer stations, two of the three strategic sanitary landfills (WENT and NENT, both among the largest landfills in the world), and seven restored landfills. Through its wholly-owned subsidiary Waylung Waste Services Limited, SITA is a major player in waste collection, street cleansing and composting.
