1941 Report – Future Control and Development of the Port Of Hong Kong

HF: Tymon Mellor has sent a report by Sir David J Owen dated 24th February 1941 on Future Control and Development of the Port of Hong Kong.

Let’s start with the scope of the report:

1941 Hong Kong Port Report

The Report contains a wealth of information both about the history of the port since early colonial days, the contemporary situation in 1941 and possible future developments. As Tymon says  there is no suggestion that war was about to envelop Hong Kong.

Warehouses or Godowns 37-40
– Hong Kong & Kowloon Wharf & Godown Company
– Messrs. Alfred Holt & Company (Messrs. Butterfield & Swire, agents)

Petroleum Oil and Spirit Accomodation 43-44
– Admiralty Oil Depot in Canton Road
– Asiatic Petroleum Company (South China) Ltd
– Socony-Vacuum Oil Company
– Texas Company (China) Ltd, Tsun[sic] Wan

Dry Dock and Shipbuilding  45-47
– The Hong Kong & Whampoa Dock Company
– Taikoo Dockyard & Engineering Company
– Messrs. WS Bailey & Company
– in addition four “native-owned and managed” shipyards in Kowloon and one “in Hong Kong”

Ferries 55-57
– The Star Ferry
– The Hong Kong and Yaumati Ferry
– The New Territories Ferries run by the Hong Kong and Yaumati Ferry Company

Future Developments 99-100
– Railway
– Ferries
