40 Flat Hill Quarry?

Bonnie Manzon (aka Bonnie Ko) recently left a comment attached to our article,Hong Kong Clays and Kaolin Company (香港磁泥有限公司) – Kaolin Mine, Cha Kwo Ling. “As a very young mother of three, we were living in ” the Bungalow” on the mining site of Hk Clays and Kaolin Co. in Cha Kwo Ling Village from 1980 to 1983.

I have bittersweet and life changing memories. I often wonder how things have changed.

Four years ago I made a journey to visit the grave of Ko Ming Fan who ran the Flat Hill Quarry.”

HF: I have not come across Flat Hill Quarry before. I asked Tymon Mellor, a frequent contributor on mines to our website if he could provide any information about Flat Hill.

Tymon: I can’t find anything on Flat Hill Quarry, however there is an unnamed hill next door to  Rocky Hill [in the Cha Ko Ling area].  You can see from this 1924 map they have started to excavate into this hill.

HF: If you can provide further information about this quarry and its location please leave a comment below this article or email the Indhhk Group directly.

According to the company registry, the Flat Hill Quarry Company Limited (平山石礦) was incorporated in 1959 and dissolved in 1995. The firm was involved in a lawsuit with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1965.

It appears that large parts of the site was re-developed into public housing estates in recent years (Choi Ying, Choi Ha, Choi Fook and Choi Tak) and more details about the site in Chinese at below link:

The photo of the grave is very interesting. Any more info on who might be interred there?

Forest View Cemetery in Burnaby, Vancouver, bc. The niches are arranged on several walls near a pond. I did look at other niches but do not recall much about them.

Sadly, I do not know anyone else buried in Vancouver. We were at our convention in Victoria and took a ferry to Vancouver.
Family kindly agreed to take us there to the grave, we had very little time to explore.

Grandfather told grandson he wished his remains be returned to his village….sort of a tall order…hopefully he ll rest in peace for a while.
